Trampas goes to visit Ida Martin and her son Joe who he stayed with as a child. He finds their home empty and deserted. He runs into a beautiful blond Judy Atkins who was a friend of Joe Martin at a scenic water hole where she goes for quiet time. She tells him he is trespassing which is confirmed by the Lee brothers when Trampas visits the gold mine Joe worked. Ida's neighbor Sam Atkins has bought the Martin place. He learns from a friend of Ida that she has moved to another town and that Joe is dead. Joe was accused of attacking Judy and killed by a posse. Trampas does not believe the story fits the friend he knew so he starts asking questions and visits the mine again where a piece of ore he takes and has analyzed indicates the new owner has found a rich vein. The mine is worked by Atkins, the Lee brothers, and Clint Richards who is engaged to Judy's sister Cathy. The sheriff tells Trampas that unless there is new evidence the case is closed. When Coop finds Cain, dehydrated, delirious, and near death, he tries to save Cain but nearly kills himself due to a lack of water and a runaway horse. While they recuperate Cain offers to sell shares in the goldmine he's discovered to all others on the wagon train. Trampas is knocked out during a stagecoach robbery where everyone else is killed and a dead robber is ultimately mistaken for him. He awakes and stumbles into the home of the sheriff who takes him into custody. On the way to jail Trampas believes his life is in danger and escapes. With the help of a young Chinese girl Kim Ho he is able to out smart the posse. When Shiloh receives word of his death, Steve leaves to see to the handling of Trampas's affairs. He joins the posse hunting for the escaped outlaw but who in reality is Trampas. Trampas learns the location of the two surviving thieves from the injured uncle of Kim. The old ranch hand, Slim Jessup, runs away from the Idaho law after he kills a man in self-defense. Meanwhile, The Virginian is charged with the task of driving 2000 head of cattle to Moose Jaw, Canada to meet a contract deadline the Judge needs to keep Shiloh solvent due to a US financial crisis. The time is short and The Virginia has no experienced trail hands. Slim an old friend of The Virginian trails the herd and when confronted asks for a job which The Viriginian is glad to offer. Along the trail a farmer's 16 year old stepson, James Cafferty, sees the herd and decides to ask to join the drive as a trail hand to escape the dull farm life. Slim counters The Virginian's objections and takes James under his wing and the two become close friends.
